SCRIPTURE

Psalm 115 (NRSV)

God's blessings on the chosen ones

Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to your name give glory,
for the sake of your steadfast love and your faithfulness.
Why should the nations say,
"Where is their God?"

Our God is in the heavens;
he does whatever he pleases.
Their idols are silver and gold,
the work of human hands.
They have mouths, but do not speak;
eyes, but do not see.
They have ears, but do not hear;
noses, but do not smell.
They have hands, but do not feel;
feet, but do not walk;
they make no sound in their throats.
Those who make them are like them;
so are all who trust in them.

O Israel, trust in the Lord!
He is their help and their shield.
O house of Aaron, trust in the Lord!
He is their help and their shield.
You who fear the Lord, trust in the Lord!
He is their help and their shield.

The Lord has been mindful of us; he will bless us;
he will bless the house of Israel;
he will bless the house of Aaron;
he will bless those who fear the Lord,
both small and great.

May the Lord give you increase,
both you and your children.
May you be blessed by the Lord,
who made heaven and earth.
The heavens are the Lord's heavens,
but the earth he has given to human beings.
The dead do not praise the Lord,
nor do any that go down into silence.
But we will bless the Lord
from this time on and forevermore.
Praise the Lord!

시편 115 (Korean Bible)

DEVOTION

Oh how I love the Psalms! Today, I am struck by the verse that says, “Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to your name give glory, for the sake of your steadfast love and your faithfulness…”

Wow! Isn’t that grand? And it is so counter-intuitive. Human beings are taught on this Earth to seek our own glory. We want to be the biggest, strongest, smartest, richest, and most famous people we can be! We have expressions like, “fake it ‘til you make it, scrap your way to the top, and don’t worry about stepping on people as you climb up the ladder to success.”

In our crazy societies people do all sorts of unethical things seeking fame, fortune, and glory! The worst of these excesses are chronicled in sordid detail in the media; we can follow along as celebrity after celebrity cycles through spouses, jail, drug or gambling addictions, domestic violence, eating disorders, and whatnot.

All of these abusive behaviors are meant to make it more possible for them to—physically, mentally, and/or spiritually--keep up the crazy lifestyles to which they have grown accustomed!

Oh my!

But, let’s keep it real today! It is not just celebrities who practice the arts of greed, gluttony, and access at all costs! Come On Somebody! Can we tell the truth on ourselves? Even the “little people” like you and me have been known to do shady, unethical, or immoral things seeking glory in the eyes of others!

Enough already, right?!

Today, the Psalmist reminds us that our soul’s desire ought to be for God’s Name to receive all the glory, honor, and praise! Our heart’s desire ought to be to make God’s Name famous everywhere we go!

Now, as human beings, we know that we are going to experience hardship and pain, but let it not be said by our non-Christian friends “where is her/his God?”

When we seek to glorify ourselves and things go awry, then non-Christians assume that our God has failed. But, when we seek to glorify God in all things, then even in our hardship and pain we will continue to bear witness to the fact that God is good (all the time)!

Psalm 115 reminds us that we can trust the Lord who is our help and shield. God is mindful of us and will bless us with great increase in our lives!

Now, does God consider a million dollars a year, a Lexus, a television pilot, and a mansion the great increase we need in our lives? (Probably not…giggles)

But, God has promised to provide for our food and clothing, to renew our minds daily, and to fill us with the Holy Spirit which will produce such attributes in us as love, joy, peace, patience, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and self-control!

What riches untold! In a world where so many people live full of worry and anxiety, don’t know a moment’s peace, and go to sleep at night sure that no one loves them, aren’t we abundantly blessed by the knowledge that our good God loves us so much that he gave Jesus to die on the cross to save us from our sin and gift us with eternal life?

The Bible says, “No one shows greater love than when he lays down his life for his friends (John 15:13).” (때보다 더 큰 사랑을 아무도 친구를 위해 자기 목숨을 낳는 보여줍니다.)

Isn’t it amazing that God has called us friends?!

Hallelujah to the King of Glory!

Dear friends, no matter what you are going through, let us say, "나는 것입니다 은총 주께서 항상" (I will bless the Lord at all times!)

God has been good to us! The very fact that we are clothed in our right minds, blessed with education enough to read this devotional, and access to the technology that brings the GOOD NEWS into our homes, proves that God has given us great increase in our lives!

Let us count our blessings—naming them one by one! Let us practice an attitude of gratitude! And above all else, let us bless and praise our God—always and in all ways—that we might be a light, example, and witness to our non-Christian friends.

Our friends need Jesus! They need to know the love of God! They need to have a blessed assurance that Jesus saves and He saves to the utmost!

As we live loving, joyful, and peaceful lives before them; they will want what we have. It is at that “open door moment” that you can—and should—recommend Jesus!

God’s peace be unto you!

Will you praise God no matter what you are going through today?

Wonderful God, thank you for all that is right in my life! Too often I concentrate on what is wrong, failing to thank and praise you for all of my many blessings! Please help me to praise you no matter what I may be going through. I am so glad that you gave Jesus to die for me! Thank you for forgiving my sin and gifting me with eternal life. Please forgive me of all of my sin and fill me with the Holy Spirit so that I may be a faithful witness to my friends. I love you and I want my friends to love you too! In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

MUSIC NOTES

Today’s music ministry is rendered by Christian friends in a Korean Church. They are singing, “I will bless the Lord at all times!” Below you will find the translation of the song that they are singing.

I will bless the Lord at all times, He's good. I will bless the Lord at all times, He's good. I will bless the Lord at all times, He's good. He's good, real good, so good; each and every day of my life I'll bless the Lord for He's good. (Joe Pace, I Will Bless the Lord at All Times)

Enjoy!
