Amos 5:1-9 (NRSV)
Seek me and live
Hear this word that I take up over you in lamentation, O house of Israel:
Fallen, no more to rise,
is maiden Israel;
forsaken on her land,
with no one to raise her up.
For thus says the Lord God:
The city that marched out a thousand
shall have a hundred left,
and that which marched out a hundred
shall have ten left.
For thus says the Lord to the house of Israel:
Seek me and live;
but do not seek Bethel,
and do not enter into Gilgal
or cross over to Beer-sheba;
for Gilgal shall surely go into exile,
and Bethel shall come to nothing.
Seek the Lord and live,
or he will break out against the house of Joseph like fire,
and it will devour Bethel, with no one to quench it.
Ah, you that turn justice to wormwood,
and bring righteousness to the ground!
The one who made the Pleiades and Orion,
and turns deep darkness into the morning,
and darkens the day into night,
who calls for the waters of the sea,
and pours them out on the surface of the earth,
the Lord is his name,
who makes destruction flash out against the strong,
so that destruction comes upon the fortress
Our GOOD NEWS Word today is, “Seek the Lord and Live.” Friends, let’s read that three times… "Seek the Lord and Live. Seek the Lord and Live. Seek the Lord and Live.” These five words will change the life of any person who truly embraces them!
The world teaches us that to find life we must seek riches, fame, and fortune. The world teaches us that to find life we must become famous far and wide. The world teaches us that to find life we must acquire more and more and more stuff. Finally, the world teaches us that to find life we must engage in the latest fad diets and cosmetic surgery.
Oh my! What terrible bad news. But, do you want to know The Truth? The truth is that the only way to find true and everlasting life is to seek the Lord!
The Bible says, “You shall know The Truth and The Truth shall make you free (John 8:32)!”
The Truth is that God loves the world so much that God gave Jesus to die on the cross to save us from our sin and gift us with eternal life!
When we get ahold of this Truth, it makes us truly free! My friends, isn’t it amazing that The Great I Am loves us so unconditionally? Isn’t it astounding that The Alpha and Omega desires us so much that God was willing to pay the ultimate price to spend eternity with us?
The Bible says, “Seek the Lord and Live.” It does not say seek riches, fame, and stuff. It says seek the Lord. Jesus is standing out in the open waiting for you to “find” Him. He is not hiding; He wants to be found!
Will you turn to Jesus? Will you seek the Lord and live?
If so, please pray with me:
God, I have experienced the heartache, pain, and destruction that comes from trying to live apart from you. Even in my darkest hour, you have always been present, ready, and willing to welcome me home. Today, I desire to truly live! I put all of my hope in Jesus believing that he died and rose again for me! Thank you for always loving me…I love you right back! Help me to share this love with others. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
