I'LL TRUST YOU LORD...

SCRIPTURE

Numbers 11:16-23, 31-32 (NRSV)

God sends quail

So the Lord said to Moses, "Gather for me seventy of the elders of Israel, whom you know to be the elders of the people and officers over them; bring them to the tent of meeting, and have them take their place there with you. I will come down and talk with you there; and I will take some of the spirit that is on you and put it on them; and they shall bear the burden of the people along with you so that you will not bear it all by yourself. And say to the people: Consecrate yourselves for tomorrow, and you shall eat meat; for you have wailed in the hearing of the Lord, saying, 'If only we had meat to eat! Surely it was better for us in Egypt.' Therefore the Lord will give you meat, and you shall eat. You shall eat not only one day, or two days, or five days, or ten days, or twenty days, but for a whole month - until it comes out of your nostrils and becomes loathsome to you - because you have rejected the Lord who is among you, and have wailed before him, saying, 'Why did we ever leave Egypt?'" But Moses said, "The people I am with number six hundred thousand on foot; and you say, 'I will give them meat, that they may eat for a whole month'! Are there enough flocks and herds to slaughter for them? Are there enough fish in the sea to catch for them?" The Lord said to Moses, "Is the Lord's power limited? Now you shall see whether my word will come true for you or not." ...

Then a wind went out from the Lord, and it brought quails from the sea and let them fall beside the camp, about a day's journey on this side and a day's journey on the other side, all around the camp, about two cubits deep on the ground. So the people worked all that day and night and all the next day, gathering the quails; the least anyone gathered was ten homers; and they spread them out for themselves all around the camp.

DEVOTION

Wow! This scripture reminds me that GOD can do anything!

It also reminds me that it is GOD who knows what is best for me and I would do well to remember to pray “Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven.”

See, so often I think I know what I need. As I pray I proscribe to God exactly how God should save me.

I know that I am not the only one who has ever prayed to God as if God is Santa Clause or a genie in a bottle.

Lord, have mercy on us!

Just as the Children of Israel prayed for meat, demanding that God provide it, and telling the lie that life was better in Egypt, so too do we pray to God demanding that God provide things that we want—but don’t necessarily need—telling the lie that if God won’t do what we command, it would be better to return to the world and the folly therein.

Shame on us!

But, there is still GOOD NEWS for us! God knows exactly what we need because God is Alpha and Omega, present in the beginning, middle, and end. God sees the whole picture and knows the whole story.

Aren’t you glad that God does not answer all our selfish, greedy, short-sighted prayers in the affirmative? I know that one more than one occasion, I have lived long enough to see the wisdom in God’s “NO.”

In the case of Moses and the Israelites, God gave them so much meat in the form of quail, that the very thought of it ultimately made them sick!

I don’t want God to have to do this to me! When Moses doubted God’s ability to make provision for him--and those whom he led--God said, “"Is [my] power limited? Now you shall see whether my word will come true for you or not."

WOOT! There it is! God’s power is not limited and God will always do just what God said God would do!

The best proof of this is seen in Jesus’ death and resurrection. God loves us so much that God gave Jesus to die on the cross to save us from our sin and gift us with eternal life. When the women went to the tomb on Easter Sunday to minister to Jesus’ body, they met an angel who said to them, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. He is not here; for He is risen, just as He said (Matthew 28:5-6).”

Aren’t you glad that God’s power is not limited and that God is able to meet all of our need according to God’s riches in glory? You can trust God! God has a good plan for you, not to harm you, but to give you a future and a hope.

Be bold as you make your requests known to God; but then be willing to accept that God knows what is best for you. God is not obligated to say “YES” to your every request. But, God has promised to do you good and not harm all the days of your life.

Now, ain’ta that GOOD NEWS?!!

Are you willing to take your most desperate situation and pray, “Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven? Lord, I trust you...”

If so, please pray with me:

Dear God, thank you that you love me so much! I know that I can cast all of my cares on You, for you care for me. Right now, O God, I entrust my most urgent cares to you. May Your Will be done on earth, as it is in Heaven. God, I will wait on the manifestation of your salvation in this situation! As I wait, I will remember that you love me so much that you gave Jesus to die on the cross to save me from my sin and gift me with eternal life! This is Your greatest gift to me; help me to share this gift with others. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
