Priest AND King Forever!
SCRIPTURE
Hebrews 7:1-10 (NRSV)
The priestly order of Melchizedek
This "King Melchizedek of Salem, priest of the Most High God, met Abraham as he was returning from defeating the kings and blessed him"; and to him Abraham apportioned "one-tenth of everything." His name, in the first place, means "king of righteousness"; next he is also king of Salem, that is, "king of peace." Without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but resembling the Son of God, he remains a priest forever.
See how great he is! Even Abraham the patriarch gave him a tenth of the spoils. And those descendants of Levi who receive the priestly office have a commandment in the law to collect tithes from the people, that is, from their kindred, though these also are descended from Abraham. But this man, who does not belong to their ancestry, collected tithes from Abraham and blessed him who had received the promises. It is beyond dispute that the inferior is blessed by the superior. In the one case, tithes are received by those who are mortal; in the other, by one of whom it is testified that he lives. One might even say that Levi himself, who receives tithes, paid tithes through Abraham, for he was still in the loins of his ancestor when Melchizedek met him.
DEVOTION
In today’s scripture we are introduced to a man named Melchizedek. Mr. M. is a very strange man because he is described as BOTH a king and a priest. Furthermore, unlike all other human beings that I know, scripture says that this man had no father, mother, ancestors, birth or death date, and that his existence is eternal.
This is an amazing pedigree, is it not? And scripture attests that Mr. M. met Father Abraham during his lifetime!
I don’t know about you, but King Melchizedeck of Salem, priest of the Most High God, king of righteousness and peace, resembling the Son of God, reminds me of my best friend JESUS.
Now, whether he was actually Jesus, or a harbinger of Jesus, I have no idea. All that I do know is that he reminds me of The One whom I love, worship, and adore.
Scripture teaches us that JESUS was present in the beginning and He will be present in the end. We understand him to be the King of Kings, Lord of Lord, and Great High Priest forever.
I don’t know about you, but I am so grateful for my relationship with Jesus! This relationship was secured because God loves us so much God gave Jesus to die on the cross to save us from our sin and gift us with eternal life. Jesus did not stay dead, but was resurrected on the third day—just as He promised!
From age to age, Love has met the needs of humanity in many ways. Love is still meeting our physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual needs each and every day.
Today, let us give praise to God for our eternal King and Priest—JESUS!
If you would like to celebrate Jesus today, please pray with me:
Holy God, thank you for the great gift that Jesus is in my life! Every single day I am blessed to experience your love as it has been revealed to me in Christ Jesus. Thank you that you love me so much that you gave Jesus to die on the cross and be resurrected on the third day in order to secure the forgiveness of my sin and eternal life. It blows me away that you would be willing to make such a large sacrifice in order to spend forever with me. Please forgive me of my sin and fill me with the Holy Spirit, so I can share your good news story with the world. I pray this in Jesus Name, Amen.
SPECIAL NOTE
If you just prayed that prayer for the first time, today, you are saved! Let me encourage you to tell a Christian friend that you just put all of your hope in Jesus. Ask him or her to help you find a Bible that is easy for you to understand and to find a good Bible believing church where you can be baptized and make new friends who will walk with you on your Christian journey!
Congratulations and Happy Re-birthday! Your salvation is our GOOD NEWS, please go and share the GOOD NEWS with others!
I would be honored if you would take a moment to click “YES” in the upper right hand corner of this blog in answer to the question, “Did God save you today?”
