SCRIPTURE
Ephesians 5:15-20 (NRSV)
Wise living in evil days
Be careful then how you live, not as unwise people but as wise, making the most of the time, because the days are evil. So do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. Do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery; but be filled with the Spirit, as you sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, singing and making melody to the Lord in your hearts, giving thanks to God the Father at all times and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
DEVOTION
Today my daughter told me, “Singing really calms me down when I am nervous or afraid.”
As I was thinking on her commentary, I read this scripture, “…be filled with the Spirit, as you sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, singing and making melody to the Lord in your hearts, giving thanks to God the Father at all times and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Hallelujah!
I feel like God is trying to tell me something! I feel like I am being reminded not to take the gift of song for granted.
Although I have many, many hymnals on my shelves, countless gospel CDs cued, and a fabulous YouTube playlist, I am afraid that I have not adequately realized the power of song until just now.
In today’s scripture Paul reminds us that not only is singing enjoyable and fun, but it is also a means of spiritual warfare. It is a way to live wisely, make the most of our time, and understand the will of the Lord.
Within the lyrics of Christian music (whether it be traditional, contemporary, gospel, or Christian rap) is the good news message that God loves, gave, and saves!
Whether we are singing “Amazing Grace,” “This Little Light of Mine,” or “Lord I Lift Your Name On High,” we are worshipping and celebrating God as we share the gospel message with whomever may be listening!
Additionally, whenever I am in deep trouble, I find myself naturally reverting to the songs of my youth. As I pray I sing songs like “What a Friend We Have in Jesus, “Love Lifted Me,” and “He Looked Beyond My Faults and Saw My Needs.”
Singing is just a fabulous way to keep our minds stayed on Jesus. It is a fun way to teach scripture and Bible principles and promises to our kids and it is always a great way to overcome darkness with light!
What will you be singing today? Let us pray:
Holy God, thank you for the gift of song! Please place a song in my heart today that will make me rejoice and be merry! I really want to be Light and Love in your world. Singing fills me with joy and I promise to share that joy with others. I pray this in Jesus’ Name, Amen.
