You are Forgiven

SCRIPTURE

Hebrews 5:1-6 (NRSV)

Christ did not glorify himself

Every high priest chosen from among mortals is put in charge of things pertaining to God on their behalf, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. He is able to deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is subject to weakness; and because of this he must offer sacrifice for his own sins as well as for those of the people. And one does not presume to take this honor, but takes it only when called by God, just as Aaron was.

So also Christ did not glorify himself in becoming a high priest, but was appointed by the one who said to him,
"You are my Son,
today I have begotten you";
as he says also in another place,
"You are a priest forever,
according to the order of Melchizedek."

DEVOTION

I am so glad that Jesus is our High Priest forever!

There is none other who is able to stand before the throne of God and make atonement for our sins in the way that Jesus does!

Other priests and pastors can pray for us. They can lift up our needs and concerns to God, but they are not God. They are not sinless. They are not the Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world!

Jesus, lived, died, and rose again all without committing a single sin against God. As the Son of God, and the second person of the Holy Trinity, Jesus is able to make perfect intercession for us.

Having lived on earth as the god-man, Jesus knows our every weakness, is acquainted with our every grief. He is sensitive to the trials and tribulations of life on this Earth and he is therefore, willing and able, to petition God on our behalf with sensitivity and compassion.

As we put all of our hope in Jesus, believing that he died on the cross to forgive our sin and gift us with eternal life, we are at peace.

We do not need to worry about whether we are forgiven; we are invited to rest in the blessed assurance that as soon as we seek forgiveness with a right heart, God is faithful and just to forgive our sin and to put it as far as the east is from the west, choosing to remember it no more!

Hallelujah!

If you have been living with a consuming guilt, today I pray that you will be set free! You are forgiven in the Name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit! Won't you turn to Jesus and receive your pardon?

Let us pray:

Holy God, thank you for Jesus who died on the cross and rose again on the third day all so that my sin is forgiven and I can have the promise of eternal life. Today I put all of my hope in you; please forgive my sin and fill me with your Holy Spirit. I am grateful for your saving work on the cross. I promise to share the good news with others. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
