ETERNAL POWER

SCRIPTURE

Romans 1:18-25 (NRSV)

The revealing of God's wrath

For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and wickedness of those who by their wickedness suppress the truth. For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. Ever since the creation of the world his eternal power and divine nature, invisible though they are, have been understood and seen through the things he has made. So they are without excuse; for though they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their senseless minds were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools; and they exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling a mortal human being or birds or four-footed animals or reptiles.

Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the degrading of their bodies among themselves, because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.

DEVOTION

I am struck by the words, "they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator..."

I think it is so sad that as sinful and fallen human beings we are prone to this type of idol worship and adoration of creatures, rather than Creator.

This can easily be seen if you turn on your television which has many "worship" programs on 24/7/365.

We are invited to bow down before the gods of money, cars, houses, and lands. We are encouraged to bow down before people, places, and things. We are instructed to worship power, prestige, and popularity.

The gods of clothing, shoes, purses, and fancy jewelry stand upon their pedestals awaiting our adoration. And the gods of amazon, ebay, and toyrsrus await our offerings...

I could go on and on, but today we are invited to remember that only GOD is deserving of our worship and praise! God is the only one who should get first place in our lives. God is the eternal power to whom we should bow our knees.

How I love our God for first loving me (and you)! How I adore Him for sending Jesus to live, die, and live again to forgive our sin and gift us with eternal life!

No other person, place, or thing has done--or will ever do--such marvelous things! Let us worship only God!

Let's pray: God, you are great beyond my imaginings. I am so sorry that I have often given first place and worship to people, places, and things created by you. Please help me to remember to worship only you in all that I say and do. I pray this in Jesus' Name, Amen.

INVITATION
